Beijing Slavic Research Center has been created to promote the wide-ranging study of topics in the Slavic field, to support cooperation between Chinese and foreign scholars, and to provide information and professional advice to relevant government agencies. BSRC is based in Beijing’s Capital Normal University (CNU).
      Slavs constitute the largest ethno-linguistic group in Europe, numbering almost 300 million (30% of the entire population of Europe), and occupying an area of some 18 million square kilometers (more than 50% of the land area of Europe). The family of Slavic nations has an ancient history and a rich culture.  The region of Eastern and Central Europe and the Balkans which they inhabit is distinguished by extraordinary cultural diversity and has contributed greatly to the material and spiritual civilization of humankind. At the same time, the Slavic area is one of the most unstable regions in Europe, or even in the whole world. It was there that the First and Second World Wars broke out, and the region remains to this day an arena of geopolitical strife. The reasons why the Slavic world should for so long have stood at  the focus of world attention include its size and cultural diversity as an ethnic group, its convoluted history and strategically important location, as well as the friction and geopolitical maneuvering that has ensued.
      Slavic studies, as the academic field concerned with the Slavic area, emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and has come to embrace a range of disciplines, including literature, linguistics, art, philosophy, history, religion, politics, economics, military science and even the natural sciences themselves. The Slavic world has a long-established relationship with China, which lends particular importance to Slavic studies within China.
Capital Normal University is one of the outstanding Chinese universities in the field of Russian and Slavic studies and its academic staff include such distinguished professors as Liu Limin, Qiu Yunhua, Liu Wenfei, Lin Jinghua, Sui Ran, Du Guizhi, Wang Zonghu. Many of them also occupy leading positions in professional organizations, including the Chinese Association of Teachers of Russian, the Chinese Association for Russian Literature Studies, the Chinese Association for Russian, East-European and Central Asian Studies and the Secretariat of the University of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. These close ties with academic and public organizations laid the foundation from which Beijing Slavic Research Center has emerged and developed.
      Beijing Slavic Research Center is conceived as an institution open simultaneously to the academic staff of Capital Normal University and of other universities, to both Chinese scholars and foreign colleagues. Each year, BSRC will invite 5-6 outstanding scholars to pursue their research at the Center for a period of one or several months.
      BSRC envisages the creation of specific research sections devoted to Russian Literature, Russian Thought, Slavic Religions, Ukraine, Poland etc.
      BSRC’s priorities for the near future include:
      1. Editing and publishing the journal Beijing Slavic Review, which will appear twice-yearly, in Chinese, Russian and English simultaneously.
      2.  Establishing a BSRC website, readable in Chinese, Russian and English.
      3.  Organizing 1-2 international conferences per year.
      BSRC’s research projects in 2015 will be:
      1.  Slavic studies abroad.
      2.  The literatures of the Slavic countries.
      3. The Silk Road and the Slavic World.
      4, The Ukrainian problem.
      Nearly 30 outstanding scholars have agreed to serve as members of the Academic Board of BSRC, including the following postholders: Chairman ― Prof. Liu Limin holds the post of Chairman, Director ― Prof. Qiu Yunhua, Chief Research Specialist ― Prof. Liu Wenfei, Deputy Director ― Prof. Wang Zonghu.
